New Rise of the Planet of the Apes trailer

While I'm on, here's another new trailer for an anticipated release. This is the latest trailer for the clunkily-titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Not convinced, myself.

New Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer

I'll stop the messing around, and just post it. A new trailer for the latest Harry Potter film was released yesterday, and here it is:

Fawlty Towers remake?!

Cleese, upon being informed of the news

Well! Big news coming out already! The classic British TV sitcom Fawlty Towers is going to be the latest IP to receive the Hollywood makeover treatment.

This is a press release that's just dropped in our inbox:

Following the death of their baby and looking for a new purpose in their destroyed lives, Basil (Gary Oldman) and his wife Sybil (Cate Blanchett) decide to open a hotel, not in sunny Torquay but instead in Moss Side in Manchester. Manuel is still Spanish, but no longer is he the lovable waiter that Andrew Sachs portrayed. Gael GarcĂa Bernal will be taking on the role of the meth amphetamine dealer and addict who uses waiting to both cover and fund his illegal activities. Polly has also undergone reinvention as well, with Hilary Swank taking on the demanding role of Basil’s live-in crack whore.

The only recognisable character from the original series will be The Major, whose role will be more or less identical to provide some light relief, and will be played by Richard Briers.

I'm sure you'll agree that this is unbelievable news. Other rumours that are circulating are that the film will feature voice-over narration, in a major change from the original series. This will supposedly be carried out by the Leeds playwright and author Alan Bennett.

As shown in the press release, the tone of the film will be significantly darker than the light-hearted sitcom known and loved by many Brits. Details of the plot are beginning to leak. Gary Oldman's Basil is taken into police custody after brutally assaulting Gael Garcia Bernal's Manuel. Insiders on the set have said it's the most shocking piece of on-screen violence since Irreversible. There is one moment in particular with a frying pan that caused crew members to be physically sick on-set.

But what about the reaction from the original cast? John Cleese was in court today on a speeding charge, and was informed of the news by waiting journalists outside. One reporter said he was "disgusted" by the news, and Cleese later took to micro-blogging website Twitter to express his views, where he said "This #fawltytowersremake is a truly disturbing development. This is not the vision for Fawlty Towers that any of us had." (#fawltytowersremake is the hashtag being used to discuss the news)
